I
am a printmaker working in lino, wood, card, in fact anything that
can be cut or glued down to create a block from which to print an
image. The experimental and unpredictable nature of printmaking
helps me escape the constraints of the detailed illustration work
I did formerly. Cutting boldly with a sharp tool, whether scissors,
scalpel or good quality lino-cutting tools helps remove the temptation
to include fussy detail. By simplifying the image I can pay more
attention to shape, pattern and texture instead.
Printing from the block (using inks) offers more scope for experiment,
particularly if more than one block is used. Sometimes unexpected
outcomes are more pleasing than the intended one.
I
am a member of the Paddock
Printmakers based at the Paddock Art Studios in Lewes. Led by
Book Artist Carolyn Trant, we meet up regularly each week to work
on both individual and group projects.
